And sometimes, while waiting for the editors to finish error-checking, I randomly google things. Sometimes it’s random chicks that might fit the part, and other times it’s a random element in the story. This time, it’s the Long Ruan (龙渊) Supple Blade!
As far as I can tell, which is pretty much nothing, that should not be the original blade but there’s too many pictures that come up as hits when searching for this!
Apparently, there is actually a Dragon Abyssal Sword! It’s an ancient sword over 2000 years ago during the Spring and Autumn Period, and appears to have been forged by master swordsmith Ou Yezi. That’s not his real name, but a means of address like a title, kind of like Laozi of the DaoDeQing, which is kind of like “Stonewall Jackson” for General Thomas Jackson. Ou is his surname, Yezi means ‘smithy’, kinda.
The King of Chu asked for the famous master swordsmith Ou Yezi to forge him a sword. From a single lump of ore, he and another master swordsmith Gan Jiang forged three swords which would all be famous. The Long Ruan blade was said to be so sharp that you could drop a handkerchief on it, and it would be sliced in half, and it could cut copper as though it was nothing. The sword was forged using water from a mountain stream. Since the stream was shaped like the 7 stars of the Big Dipper, the full name is called the 7-Stars Dragon Abyssal Sword (七星龙渊剑).

The region where the Long Ruan was forged was named Long Ruan county after the sword, and today there is a 2000 year old temple built in honor of Ou Yezi, master swordsmith. The name had to be changed because of the naming taboo according to a Chinese wiki, which should apply to the fact that an Emperor must’ve had ‘Abyssal’ in his name (what a badass) and nothing is allowed to share the same character. This is a wiki if you want more info. Maybe we’ll go visit it some time :3
