Yao Nie Bing Wang (WSK) Chapter 136

Chapter 136

A ton of shit happened, and we’re super late. Racing to finish the other chap before this is over. DT had been sick and so I was soloing, then a bunch of stuff came out and my power was out for a few hour right before this >.> ANYWAYS.

Okay guys, I should forewarn you guys before you read this chapter. In many ways, this webnovel is a lot different than the plethora of xuanhuan/xianxia that is being translated. If you absolutely cannot get over GuoGuo ripping off Xu Yun, and consider it an irreparable, abominable injustice that surely the Heavens should call foul and strike the BiXian (the author) to death with lightning, then… well let’s just say that point is probably not gonna change – DT binge-read 60+ chaps ahead.

To each his own, and if you feel that way, it’s a sentiment that may just be incompatible with this relatively lighthearted, kick-back webnovel, kinda like how a friend of mine can’t stand One Punch Man because he absolutely hates the indifferent calmness of his character. Do what you gotta do –  you’re always welcome to come here and read and comment if you like.

Now for a prolonged translation note that’s kinda like a blog post!

An introduction to Chinese culture! Plz watch this video:

Now of course, parts of the video were a bit exaggerated, but I’ll be perfectly honest, some of the video wasn’t done tough enough! There is a general difference between girls from the North, and girls from the South. Girls from the North are often tough, feisty, don’t take shit and are very straightforward.

There have been a lot of comments for a while wondering why X or Y or Z is a bitch, yeah that kinda feisty-ness doesn’t work that well with a lot of opinions of what femininity should be in the world, but it’s pretty common in Northern China.

Shanghai is on the border between north and south, and the author is from Shandong which is clearly north, so his women are written like northern ones. One time I went paintballing with a group of friends who brought some friends, one chick (who was actually Shanghainese, so not a northerner) got shot in the neck and rather than curling up in pain, she instead gave a death glare. An ex-mecha mushroom teammate told us about a Shanghainese couple, wherein the wife was publicly beating up her husband with punches and totally not giving a fuck about the crowd staring in horror.

This story takes place in mostly JiangSu region which is not far from Shanghai or Shandong. There’s a saying about Shanghainese women, that they’re tigers but kittens to their husbands – not in the case of that one couple above LOL. Maybe this greatly contrasts what the world views asians as quiet people who keep to themselves. Most Chinese diaspora before the more recent wave in the past were actually from Southern China.

I don’t have time to be informative about the translation quirks, felt this was more important. Enjoy!

  1. thanks—!
guoguo ripping xu yun off is ok, after all, xu yun’s a stupid parent! pffft!
lol, the north girls sound cooler, keke! it’s fine to be strong and all, but there’s still a matter of gratitude and respect, hm?

      1. Thanks, we’ll try our best! That being said, the past two years have been full of illness T_T … I’m not used to having to spend so much time bedridden, but that’s life.

Oh and for your other point, the girls indeed seem disrespectful to Xu Yun, but that’s because they don’t see him as an outsider and thus skip many Western-oriented pleasantries and politeness. In Han Chinese culture, treating someone with politeness and courtesy is an insult if the two or more people are considered to have a close relationship.

Instead you are supposed to show how much you value a relationship by how much care and concern you display when a loved one needs help, is sick, has family troubles etc. And you’re supposed to help and support your loved ones, regardless of your difficulties and typically without any questions or reservations – all of this is in lieu of saying please, thank you, and similar formalities for each and every situation.

        1. -pats your back- illnesses are indeed trying! stay strong—!

hm, i see what you mean about the culture part. and yes, i do get it. the closer you are with a person, the less you care about courtesies and stuff, it’s something like that, right? you’d be more comfortable with people close to you and be yourself, etc.

that’s fine, i can see how the girls show that, treating xu yun as one of them, one of the people on their side. what i have a problem with, is how the girls show it. wan’er, i can see it clearly, and qiu yan too.

but like, fan shuang’er, she doesn’t respect him enough, in my opinion. i still see that she somewhat looks down on him? it’s also the same with tang jiu, she wants to ask him for a favour, but the way she treats him…-sighs- anyway, yeah, i get what you’re saying, i just don’t like the way some of the girls act towards xu yun. this will probably be the last time i rant about the girls, i have to rein in the rants!

        2. i’m glad you agree about fan shuang’er! though, i really love the fact that she’s a strong woman and all, her personality sure spoils it…

lol, the guoguo rants! hm— while guoguo does make trouble for xu yun, as the doting, baka parent that he is, i totally understand! i’m waiting to see if there’s an instance where guoguo will go too far and get scolded, or an instance when guoguo knows how to voluntarily retreat.(usually, guoguo retreating involves ruan qingshuang or qiu yan convincing her to)

also, i’m on the lookout for a strong(with martial arts, please) woman in this series that has manners, treats xu yun nicely, and whose character leans closer to ruan qingshuang’s or xiaoran’s. will such a woman ever appear?! i hope so! so far, the ‘strong’ women are either cold, rude or arrogant! i don’t mind, but objec—tion!

        3. guoguo had a little period of being less flippant and more obedient, but its been too far from recent memory. overall i really doubt she will change, so i’m guessing we’ll be seeing plenty of guoguo hate for as long as we translate…not that ppl shouldn’t freely speak their mind but…its kinda de-motivating i guess.
for me i just wanna see xu yun fight more, not cuz action is the only thing im interested in, but so far bixian explores more mood and world when he does that. i rly don’t care much for the harem stuff at all, i wanna find out more about the underworld, the gangsters and stuff like that. also, bixian sure sucks at presenting a girl english readers like LOL.

        4. well, i mean, guoguo was shown to be cunning and a little tyrant from the beginning, lol! and xu yun’s such a baka father, i’m not surprised she gets her way so often. but, like i think i’ve mentioned before, i’d sure like to see an instance when xu yun puts his foot down! hm—though it seems like in the real serious moments, either qingshuang or qiu yan would have already admonished guoguo.

yeah, i realise it’s rather de-motivating when i rant about people who are on the MC’s side, as opposed to ranting about the enemies. i’m trying to rein it in—! but no matter what, have faith that people like xu yun and this story for what it is, ahaha!

hm, yeah, i’m also really interested in the underworld and stuff! i want to know more about that world!…hm, now i’m itching for a story about mercenary/special military team adventures in the underworld. with bonu romance, maybe!hahaha! oops, i got distracted.

yeah, i don’t care much about the harem stuff, though i do like a bit of romance, i don’t know if i want it in this series lol. bixian’s girl characters are varied and cool, but some of them are too extreme—!

i mean, i usually like the stronger, martial arts women more, but in this series, the ones who have my admiration and respect are really ruan qingshuang, with xiaoran coming in later. qiu yan, then wan’er, and then tang jiu, followed by fan shuang’er last. i’ll say it again, but i’m just waiting to see if bixian will have a strong, martial arts woman whose character is closer to qingshuang’s and xiaoran’s—

        5. xu yun kinda put down his foot when he said it doesn’t matter if guoguo agrees or not since she came looking for him for help…but i guess unless he paddles her or something the witch hunt wont end LOL.

of all of them i felt that RQS is the best, but i guess that would be too drama-like and could get repetitive quickly if he just keeps saving her. tang jiu is so out of place imo.

          Like

        6. eh— he says he’s putting his foot down, but he’s not really doing it. i just want to see an instance, at least once, where xu yun actually, really does put his foot down! gah, once! but i think, things are not pressing enough yet.

yeah, ruan qingshuang’s best so far, but she’s a normal person, so there’s not much that can happen, i guess, besides the saving her. though i think it’d be interesting if she had a hidden background or something, lol. tang jiu? hm—a rich girl is something that is ok to appear, especially considering xu yun’s old line of work? ahaha!

        7. Thanks again! Old habits of neglecting health indeed are hard to change.

I totally agree with you about Fan Shuang’er! It’s almost like she doesn’t believe what everyone else in Dragon Fury says in regards to Xu Yun because of some misconstrued expectations about how he should be versus reality.

Tang Jiu too, she’s completely looking down on Xu Yun with her dog eyes, but then turns around and asks him a favor… Well she’s a spoiled second generation mainlander… I heard from mainlanders themselves that they hate the second generation wealthy, because of the whole attitude issue.

Hopefully the girls start to change over time, because Xu Yun might really have to leave HeDong, then they’ll be stuck never being able to repay him for his help, generosity and kindness.

Rants about the girls hating/disrespecting Xu Yun are welcome (a lot of it is true after all)! We just hope that all rants somewhat resemble human language (which is not always the case).

    1. LOL well honestly Xu Yun can go rob some thugs anytime he wants to, but he doesn’t care, only wants booty xD
honestly qin wan’er is like a poster girl of northern girls imo, except for the chest i guess lol

      1. Yea,as midoriha said, this is a matter more of respect and gratitude, which neither of them seems to show beside Ruan, but she barely has any presence.
And I personally love tough girls, especially tiger but kittens to their husbands, except this is none of it.The cop is just annoying and ungrateful plus that her antics with pervert are so lame I cringe every time.
The problem right now is the next one:A story should improve and develop the characters from the beggining to the end.Right now it’s the oposite. The mc started badass and cool, and his interactions were pretty nice.Guo too,she was likable in the beggining and had a few nice jokes.
Except, now everything has gone haywire. The mc became submissive and has none of the bearings of a trained expert. He takes every shit from the group and always pledges as defeated even though he doesn’t try at all.And guo seems to be the adult right now.
And considering your statement with ‘booty’,that was the reason Xu helped in the first place, yet we are 100+ ch and they didn’t even has a god damn kiss, even tough he brags so much about wanting booty.
And about the girls, none of them would have any right to say a thing in case he would move with his advances. Not even Qiu Yan.Since as long as you don’t show any sign of wanting a relationship, you don’t have any reason to bitch about it.So yea,the girls sure as hell can’t be considered a detriment to his relationship with Ruan.

        Still,go tough girls!!

        1. imo, i think the MC all along was just really easygoing and didn’t care about these kind of things much, and as for his ‘game’ in picking up girls, well it’s not great but not the emphasis of the novel either. this novel is labeled as easygoing and ‘refreshing reading’ in chinese – more slice of life than the voyage of conquering like many of the other translated novels. theres really no need for him to strut – much more in the spirit of one punch man. actually if he started strutting like some of the xuanhuan/xianxia, we would’ve dropped translating it ages ago.

as for ‘bearings of a trained expert’, i actually know trained experts in various fields and the key is humbleness, and better yet being low key, not being commanding or prideful. people who do otherwise easily make a lot of enemies and though it isnt some wuxia where they’d duel each other, there is certainly no shortage of shit-talking (which can be very amusing xD) and plenty of ostracization. in fact i know an expert who was going around challenging other masters and schools and no one wants anything to do with him cuz he’s a total jackass. even his students quit until he shaped up his act.

‘booty’ was his main purpose for obeying guoguo in the first place, meant in a lighthearted sense. this isn’t an erotic novel nor an adult novel, and though it’s harem its more about slice of life. actually it’s not even labeled as harem by 17k. i really don’t expect romances to develop much, but for me thats actually good xD

      2. yeah, xu yun isn’t really someone who pursues money much, true! hey, guoguo got him to stay because she said she’d help him with ruan qingshuang, after all! hm, wan’er is the poster girl? yeah, she does fit. and she’s also considered a ‘normal’ girl of sorts in the series, and her strong personality!

        1. i really do think she’s a poster girl. she’s like a lot of chinese girls i met in college. to me it seems like people read text in a certain way, and instantly interpret it as malicious, like in the video when the girl says, “come on pussy”, without hearing it you might just think it was purely offensive.

        2. hm—were those chinese girls you met from china? or are they like, second, third generation? i mean, i have a lot of chinese friends too, but majority are third or fourth generation, with a few second generation, or from china.
yes, people do read text in a certain way. lol yeah, i think it also depends on background and context!

        3. ofc they’re…for want of a better phrase fobs LOL. nowadays ‘mainlanders’ frequently refers to them, who have spent a long time in china before moving. us ABC’s behave very differently from the mainlanders, much more westernized. in fact, even in very asian schools, the fobs and the ABCs often form separate cliques and don’t associate much.

          Liked by 1 person

        4. i confess to having to google for fobs and abcs lol, yay urbandictionary— though i did know about the term abc, just, i’m too lazy to think, keke!

ah, we use ‘mainlanders’ here too. well— in schools, there isn’t much of a separation, and we have foreigners from other countries too. but, i think in society, the singaporean born chinese certainly don’t like to be grouped together with the mainland chinese, for several reasons.

        5. ah sorry, i knew it was american lingo but didn’t have too long to think about it.
we had mainlanders at my hs, but they were very insular and i didn’t bother to reach out to them. it wasn’t until college when i had a lot of asian friends that said they hated fobs, despite going to schools with like 90% asians (in america ‘asian’ usually refers to east asian), because they were usually from wealthy families and acted obnoxiously, looking down on anyone less wealthy than them and bringing that very hostile competitiveness over to here. who knows, maybe they’re the children of corrupt government officials who fled to america.

        6. lol! yeah, we have those snobbish ones here too, but then again, people don’t tend to like snobbish people anyway, ahaha! the reputation in society that they have here is being very rude and loud.

but then, singaporeans nowadays have the view that skilled foreigners are ‘stealing’ their jobs away from them, which is true to some extent,i guess.

in schools, there’s not much of a separation between those who are foreigners and those who aren’t, but yeah, society seems to have some problems. i don’t know where i’m going with this anymore lol!

        7. oh thats pretty interesting about the jobs. hard to beat the amount of graduates from china, and the amounts they will work for! hopefully they still over value western degrees, i might end up in asia one day xD

        8. nowadays, it’s a lot more about skills and stuff, though degrees are still looked. yeah, we aren’t lacking in jobs here, fortunately, though it’s still competitive! haha, enjoy if you come to asia!
