Twenty seven days in a row, no breaks! We each spend roughly 3 hours a chapter, no idea how those crazy guys can do a chapter in 4 hours because 3 hours per person per chapter is 12 hours LOL. Hopefully we’ll get better as time goes by, which we will, but we hope to get faster, sooner!

As a crazy guy who can do a chapter in 3 hrs. I would say it depends on what you’re translating. (I currently translate 3 novels, each on a different difficulty. Lu Bu would usually take me 6 hours a chapter, more if it was written super hard. VW:CCM is like 4 or 5 hrs. My Waifu is about 3 hrs because wordcount just doubled. It was like 70 mins before.)
I was told the stuff the crazy guys translated are rather simple in context. Once you created an extensive glossary, you’re pretty much set.

Thanks that’s really encouraging! We were dreaming of two chapters a day, but the amount of idioms, slang and cultural references is merciless with this guy! On one hand it’s really interesting to learn like ‘real Chinese’ and not that classroom stuff we took in uni, but we certainly are no native mainlanders xD
6 hours sounds like quite a handful man, but your readers are probably in for some nice literature at least right? I’m glad our chapters are so far consistent in content, I’d hate to have a nasty surprise after work xD

You can usually translate the idioms directly. Otherwise, if it’s really too confusing, what I ended up doing is copying the idiom and put baike behind that and put that on google. 50% chance it will bring you to a baike page telling you what the idiom means. As for slangs, they’re usually pretty easy to detect. The best way to replace a slang is with another slang. So I replace my chinese slangs with english slangs. Not hard. maybe that’s cause I speak with a shitload of slangs myself having grew up in chicago…

No, Lu Bu have too much cultural reference. Many people don’t bother reading it due to that. It gets real confusing. Also, because I try to keep the way people talk as accurate as possible, the reading flow is real bad too. I mean, pretty much everyone is referring to themselves in 3rd person…
Yeah, but it seems like the chapters will steady to 2.2k words later…. hopefully that’s soon… a couple of the earlier Lu Bu chapters were 7k words…

finding baike was like el dorado… we were getting so pwned before that, asking all these people xD and it’s not that slangs are hard to detect, its sometimes really hard to find out what they really mean, i guess because its so commonly known in china. like niu bi, slang for tough guy, that took like an hour to find. sometimes they don’t define things very well either, like when we had to look up nima, they just said “its to insult people”, the characters are actually the characters of a city.
mostly we were looking for ways to shave off time, and a lot of it were things we couldn’t do much about, like our translation speed (assuming no problematic cultural terms), breaking up sentences to fit better cuz of the comma craze, it seemed like the best way was to just know the phrases, but he rarely uses the same phrase twice so far. I think we only found one repeat of the harder ones.
